Judge against the Machine

The process of evaluating AI responses at Meta

Before a system can evaluate an AI response, someone has to establish the rules.

What constitutes a successful interaction? How should the system respond when it can't fulfill a request? Is an incomplete response always a failure? What distinguishes a justified refusal from an unnecessary one?

These aren't exclusively technical questions. They're questions about intent, language, context, and the expectations people bring to an experience.

As a Content Engineer, part of my responsibility is translating these expectations into evaluation criteria. I define the conditions under which an interaction should pass or fail, considering whether the model correctly interpreted the request, completed the intended task, or appropriately declined to act.

The challenge is making subjective judgments explicit enough to be evaluated consistently.
